Grand Chess

Grand Chess is a chess variant invented by Christiaan Freeling. It is very similar to standard Chess, with the following exceptions:

  1. The board is 10x10, and two extra pieces (the Marshal and Cardinal) have been added.
  2. Pawns promote optionally on moving to the eighth or ninth rank, compulsory on moving to the tenth.
  3. A pawn may only promote to a piece previously lost by its side.
  4. "Castling" is not allowed.
A very nice introduction to Grand Chess is hosted by MindSports.
